Almost Home Rescue of New England

Rescuing All Breeds & Finding Them Forever Homes

By Susan Spisak

Since 2005, the 501(c) (3) all-volunteer, foster-based Almost Home Rescue of New England (AHR) is dedicated to saving lives and finding forever homes for stray, abandoned, and surrendered dogs of all breeds. The majority of their dogs come from one of their newer partners, Summit’s Sanctuary in Alabama, as well as their long-standing partners in Mississippi and North Carolina. All of these imported dogs arrive with a current Health Certificate, meet Maine state import and vaccination requirements, are wormed, micro-chipped, and transported on an U.S.D.A. approved transport.

They will accept dogs from local shelters, veterinarians, and other situations that require rescue. “Many of our local dogs come from neglect situations or when an owner ages out of being able to properly care for their dog,” said President Meredith Burwell Oestreicher.  They will accept local owner surrenders if foster homes are available. Meredith noted that they’re lucky to have a strong, passionate base of homes to care for their dogs temporarily. One dedicated foster recently saw her 103rd pup land in a perfect home!

AHR is introducing a component to their foster program to give their regular homes a break. “We are piloting a new ‘respite’ foster program where approved fosters take a long-term dog for a night, weekend, or vacation coverage…We provide all supplies, vetting, and support to our fosters, they just provide a stable, loving landing pad.” And that, in a nutshell, is fostering. If you’re interested and would like to be involved, fill out an application on their website. (The link is below.)

She indicated the number of dogs they’ve taken under their wing has decreased in the last few years, with 2025 being their slowest ever. Meredith believes it’s because new rescues are constantly popping up, and local shelters are importing dogs more often. But things are looking up: “We are off to a much better start this year.”

AHR’s policy is that if any of their dogs cannot stay with their adoptive family for any reason, they must advise them first rather than rehoming them. “If the dog has unresolved behavioral issues or has a history of aggression, we are not able to take them back into a foster. This is pretty rare and we are able to take the majority of returns and successfully place them into new homes,” clarified Meredith.

They rely on donations and fundraising, especially in light of the fact that many of their dogs have special medical needs. So, to support their cause and have a wonderful evening, you’re invited to their Annual Party for the Pups on November 7th at the Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard Beach. There will be a huge silent auction with a variety of items, raffles, a DJ and dancing, light appetizers, and a cash bar. They welcome volunteers and donations of goods and/or services. Watch their website for hours and info.

AHR is thorough in their adoption and foster process. They check vet references, verify landlord approval/references if applicable, and perform home visits. For info on fostering, volunteering, and to see all their adoptables, visit almosthomerescue.net

KOBE

2 years old, Mixed Breed

Kobe is a handsome boy! He is sweet, sensitive, and walks well on a leash. He enjoys the company of other dogs, older kids, loves going for walks, and chewing on bones. Kobe is clearly relieved to be in a safe home but can still be shy if approached quickly. However, he warms up and becomes a loyal companion quickly. He has a strong instinct to retrieve balls, which may suggest Whippet or Greyhound mixed in along with his stinking cute Houndness! Because of his prey drive, Kobe should always be kept on a leash or within a secure, fenced yard, as he will quickly chase after woodland creatures if given the chance.

LILLY

Less than 1 year old, Mixed Breed

Lilly is a princess. She is an Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler/Shepherd mix! Lilly is a gentle, shy girl with a warm heart who loves to snuggle. She’s affectionate, serene, and needs a home with another respectful dog for support. Her sweet nature makes her ideal for relaxing at home or taking leisurely walks. She gets along with other dogs and her foster mom's cat. Lilly seeks a caring family who can offer love, patience, and comfort. If you’re looking for a calm, loving companion, Lilly could be perfect for you.
