Kerrville, Texas, June 17, 2026 – Two Brunswick, Maine animal welfare leaders – Jess Townsend, Executive Director of Midcoast Humane, and Esther Mechler, founder of SPAY/USA and United Spay Alliance – are among 45 contributors featured in the new book Humane Perspectives: Leadership in Animal Welfare.
Although their paths in animal welfare have been very different, both women share personal stories about the challenges, decisions, and defining moments that helped shape their leadership and influence the evolution of animal welfare.
In her chapter, “Stepping Away from Shelter Led to My Greatest Challenge,” Townsend reflects on her journey in animal welfare, from volunteering with a cat rescue to leading one of Maine’s largest animal shelters. Blending humor, honesty, and hard-earned perspective, she shares the lessons she learned working in nearly every aspect of shelter operations and why, despite the exhaustion and unpredictability of the work, she ultimately found her way back to the field she loves.
“If you’re just getting started in animal welfare, brace yourself,” she writes. “It’s messy and unpredictable, but absolutely worth it.”
Townsend is also joined in the book by fellow Brunswick, Maine animal welfare leader Esther Mechler, who is well-known nationally for her work in promoting early spaying and neutering of pets. In her chapter, From Grief to Action: How One Cat Sparked a National Spay/Neuter Movement, Mechler shares how the euthanasia of a shelter cat named Buddha inspired her to launch SPAY/USA and help build a nationwide spay/neuter movement that continues to reduce pet overpopulation across the country.
"I never wanted to lead a national movement,” says Mechler. “I just didn't want another Buddha to die. That one cat changed my life and helped change the lives of millions more."
Humane Perspectives: Leadership in Animal Welfare is the first book to bring together first-person leadership essays from leaders across the animal welfare field, each sharing the experiences, challenges, and defining moments that shaped both their leadership and the modern animal welfare movement. Although Jess Townsend and Esther Mechler took very different paths, both demonstrate how individual leaders can influence the animal welfare field.
“Jess's chapter highlights the realities of leading a modern shelter through significant challenges, while Esther's story reminds us how one person's determination can spark a movement that changes the lives of millions of animals,” says Cathy M. Rosenthal, editor and curator of Humane Perspectives: Leadership in Animal Welfare.
