Furry Words January 2026

Furry Words January 2026

I believe this is my fourteenth or fifteenth January edition, and every time it reminds me how quickly time is passing by! We can note time by gray hairs, our dogs’ muzzles, or for me it’s realizing my son is twenty, and my hands are starting to look like my mom’s when she was older. What a wild ride this life is and thank God (or whomever you’d like to give credit to) that we can have sweet pups as our companions. I want to kick off the new year by telling you about the coolest reading I did for a woman who had just lost her fifteen-year-old terrier. Stick with me, it’s not morbid, I promise!

Whenever I call a client, that client gets the spiel if he or she never had a reading before, which includes the following. “Everything is fair game, and you can ask about people and pets, living and deceased, and you can bounce around, and I’ll follow your lead. If I give you anything medical, I have an environmental degree, and I only relay what I’m shown/told/hear, so please bounce it off a licensed Vet or doctor. Finally, use me like a street sign. I’ll tell you what the road looks like, and you have free will and can take whichever feels best for you.” Then I ask what the client would like to know or where the client would like to start. Some people say, “tell me what you get”, but you’d be surprised how many times it’s a dog from your childhood or your neighbor’s that grabs the mic first. That’s why I ask what kind or color because it helps me figure out if I have the one the client is expecting.

This woman led in with, “I want to ask about my dog who just passed two weeks ago today.” I instantly felt the dog’s energy and the owners. What struck me was I didn’t feel the debilitating grief I usually do, but rather acceptance and gratefulness. She said that she knew she was failing and didn’t want her to suffer, but she also needed to know that her dog crossed the rainbow bridge and was okay. Disclaimer. All dogs and pets are amazing when they pass! We struggle, we hurt, we suffer, we grieve. It is also one thing that everyone can agree on. Losing a companion dog totally sucks. It levels us, and it does so equally for the most part. She said that she didn’t want the dog to suffer and as hard as it was, she knew the dog was ready. I was impressed by her awareness and told her so!

She asked what it was like for her dog to pass and the response blew me away. I was shown her holding a plastic green watering can (the same one I have) and pouring a steady stream of water to the dog for its entire life. The water was her love, awareness, support, etc. When the dog came out of the vet’s office and was on hospice at their house, she didn’t pull back her love to protect her heart. She leaned in hard and soaked up every second they had together. When the dog was ready to go, I saw the water as almost frozen in time but crystal clear, and the dog climbed up the water and into the watering can, which represented heaven and all the love she gave to him. She literally created the bridge from here to “home.” I don’t know about you, but that is simply beautiful and nothing I have seen before!

So, if you have a dog, there will be a day you say goodbye. Live your time together with awareness and grace. Give thanks that you were able to have this partnership with the dog and reflect on the life lessons he helps you navigate. If it feels right, share your tears when they pass and I’ll tell you why. We can all bond over the loss of a pet we loved. We are gracious in our love, and we send prayers and these moments build connection, which we desperately need more of. And when the dog leaves, keep talking to him and ask him to let you know he’s around! So, is launching the year with words about death bizarre? Nope. Every January 1st is a reminder to take a look around and be grateful for what you have. You can consider it an excuse for a fresh start or simply manifest what it is you’re looking to achieve or experience in 2026. Most importantly, know that your beloved people and pets will be alongside you in spirit.
