West Kennebunk, ME- The Animal Welfare Society is pleased to announce that we will be receiving another dog transfer on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Puppy Pipeline founder, Mike Dougherty is a part-time Kennebunk resident who brought his first transfer to Animal Welfare Society in 2006. Since then he has placed over 850 dogs. The Paws Across America program allows us to transport highly desirable dogs and puppies from overpopulated areas to our West Kennebunk shelter and take advantage of the Animal Welfare Society’s adoption placement resources. Dogs and puppies are transported based on available kennel space and adoption demands.

Upon arrival, each dog is processed and made comfortable in one of our dog kennels. After a seven day holding period and health evaluation the dogs will be available for adoption. AWS adoption fees include spaying or neutering, the first series of vaccinations, a heart worm test, internal and external parasite control, a free veterinarian exam, a collar with leash and personalized ID tag, and the offer of discounted Obedience Classes.

The Paws Across America Program is an exciting program that finds homes for many wonderful dogs, and increases foot traffic to our shelter, which in turn increases adoptions for the other dogs, cats and small animals that are currently in our facility. In addition, each time a dog is adopted from an animal shelter instead of purchased from a pet store it lessens the demand for Puppy Mill* dogs. It’s a win-win situation for the animals, and our wider community.

*Puppy Mills are "factory style" dog-breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs. Most dogs raised in puppy mills are housed in shockingly poor conditions with improper medical care. Parents of the puppies are kept in cages to be bred over and over for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever joining a family.
