Animal Welfare Society to bring puppies to families in Maine
It is a goal of the Animal Welfare Society to help increase adoption rates and quality of animal care and reduce euthanasia and shelter overcrowding in less fortunate states by placing as many dogs as possible through our Paws Across America transfer program, while meeting the adoption demands in New England.
The Paws Across America program allows us to transport highly desirable dogs and puppies from overpopulated areas to our West Kennebunk shelter and take advantage of the Animal Welfare Society’s adoption placement resources. Dogs and puppies are transported based on available kennel space and adoption demands.
In mid-November AWS will welcome 30 such dogs including 10-week-old Black Lab mix puppies, 5-month-old Shepherd puppies and a 10-month-old Wire Fox Terrier mix. After being quarantined and evaluated these dog will be listed on our website (www.animalwelfaresociety.org) available on a first come, first serve basis. It is not uncommon for lines to form in the early am on the days the dogs become available.
The transfer program provides complete veterinary care, Spay/Neuter service, behavior and obedience training, and placement opportunity through the Animal Welfare Society’s adoption program. The Animal Welfare Society’s adoption program makes pets available to the public through on site visits, website profiles, and periodic listings in regional newspapers.
Since the Paws Across America program began in 2002, we have successfully placed over 1,000 dogs and puppies. These fortunate dogs now enjoy their New England homes and families. In many cases these dogs would have been euthanized had they not found their way to our shelter.
