Using human grade, organic and most importantly, local ingredients such as buckwheat, parsley, sea vegetables and honey, Barkwheats offer the pet owner a snack that is not just tasty and healthy for the dog, but also healthy for the environment. This gives pet owners the peace of mind that they are helping preserve the planet while letting their dogs know they love them.
Founded by Roberts in 2007, Barkwheats Dog Biscuits™ focuses on not only organic ingredients, but also supporting local Maine agriculture by purchasing as much as 97% of the ingredients from Maine farmers. This helps to keep Barkwheats’ small carbon footprint by not needing to truck in ingredients from out of state, and also helps to keep Maine dollars in Maine’s economy.

"While shopping for dog biscuits for my two lab rescues, I noticed that though organic treats were offered, no one was offering a solution to the waste stream created by purchasing those treats. I was determined to create a fabulous biscuit for my dogs and also have as little impact on the earth as possible by utilizing compostable packaging materials and local ingredients.”
The two flavors of biscuits, “Ginger & Parsley” and “Sea Veg & Chamomile” were created to give dog owners a reward plus a supplement all in one bite. The ginger helps to relieve inflammation and the parsley helps to freshen breath and provide vitamin K. The sea vegetables offer detoxification by way of scavenging heavy metals from the blood stream and chamomile offers a soothing aroma to help calm nervous pets. Buckwheat improves circulatory flow and the eggs help improve the coat. The honey is raw when purchased, and baked in for a touch of sweetness.
