Downeast Dog News Nominated
for National Award
ROCKLAND, Maine (January 17, 2008)—Downeast Dog News, a newspaper for people who love dogs and want to read about Maine’s dog community, has been nominated for an award in the canine newspapers category in the Dog Writer’s Association of America 2007 competition. The winner will be announced at an awards banquet to be held February 10, the night before the Westminster Kennel Club’s 132nd Annual All Breed Dog Show, in New York City.
Each issue of Downeast Dog News (DDN) contains educational articles, local dog news and events, a dog-related job profile, dogs available for adoption and more. The newspaper’s goals are to support dog-friendly businesses and Maine-made pet products and services, to cultivate a community of responsible dog ownership and to support animal welfare causes.
Holly Sherburne of Warren, publisher of DDN, said in a prepared statement, “It’s been important to me from the beginning that Downeast Dog News contains high quality content and writing, and that all articles are objective, well-researched and written by and about Maine people when possible.”
The Dog Writers Association of America, begun in 1935, holds an annual writing competition designed to encourage quality writing about dogs in all aspects of companionship, plus the dog sport. The competition is open to all writers, photographers, editors and publishers.
“As the newspaper’s publisher,” Sherburne said, “I view my role as one that provides a vehicle for information about dogs and Maine’s dog community to be shared around the state. I rely on local experts to share their expertise through Downeast Dog News as much as possible. Though, interestingly, we have subscribers from all over the country. I attribute this to quality stories and information that is relevant to all dog-lovers, not only those in Maine.”
DDN, which has a circulation of 15,000, has been published the first of every month since the first edition in May 2006. The advertiser-supported paper is distributed throughout Maine at pet supply stores, veterinarian’s offices, groomers, coffee shops and other pet-friendly establishments. Annual subscriptions are also available for home delivery.
