Help the Animal Refuge League

On August 21, 2007 the Animal Refuge League in cooperation with the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk, the Maine State Animal Welfare program and the Buxton Police Department rescued over 230 dogs from deplorable substandard puppy mill conditions on a property in York County. The animals included French Bulldogs, Papillons, Brussels Griffons, Poodles, Shetland Sheepdogs, German Shepherds, and mini Australian Shepherds.

The animals were kept in unsanitary conditions and many of them suffered from dental problems, mange, and giardia. Overcrowding also severely restricted the dogs’ movement. Most are under-socialized and unaccustomed to human contact. Much work remains to be done in order to help these dogs successfully transition to adoptive homes once custody has been awarded.

For the past 45 days these animals have been in the care of the Animal Refuge League and several other wonderful animal welfare groups. Plans are underway to move these animals to a location where they can continue to receive expert veterinary care and attention from the ARL staff and other caring professionals.

We urgently need your gift to help cover the costs of caring for these helpless animals.
