Labrador Joins Bangor Liaison Committee

Bangor—Bangor Center Corporation Announces Appointment of Labrador to Liaison Committee

Officials of Bangor Center Corporation believe that Bangor, Maine may be the first community on earth to appoint a canine to a committee. On July 31, 2007, Zoe, a black Labrador retriever attended her first meeting of Bangor Center Corporation's Downtown Liaison Committee.

Bangor Center Corporation (BCC) is a watchdog for Downtown's interests, and is working to make Downtown an increasingly dog-friendly place. BCC develops and implements activities that encourage retention and growth of retail, service, and professional businesses; residential life; cultural organizations and government offices in the downtown district.

BCC's Downtown Liaison Committee meets throughout the year with City department liaisons associated with public safety, pedestrian, and vehicular issues, and with downtown stakeholders and conducts public meetings on a variety of issues.

In 2006, Zoe advised BCC on the placement of doggie walk stations in downtown Bangor. That program has nearly eliminated the nuisance of dog waste left behind by negligent owners in the downtown area. When BCC decided to turbo-charge its efforts to make downtown Bangor even more hospitable for canines, and to seek a volunteer canine to serve on a working committee, Zoe's experience put her at the top of the list for BCC's consideration.
