A Downeast Dog Scouts Troop Forming This Fall

A Downeast Dog Scouts Troop will be forming this fall on Mount Desert Island and is seeking people that enjoy doing fun activities with their dogs, while encouraging responsible dog guardianship and education. The troop will offer opportunities for members to participate in dog centered activities and to nurture a closer relationship with their dog. Members of the Downeast Dog Scouts Troop may participate in a variety of activities such as: fun get-togethers, picnics, field trips to “dog friendly” places, backpacking, hiking, swimming, boating, rally, agility, letterboxing, geocaching, parades, games, training using positive reinforcement methods, educational meetings or seminars, in-school programs, volunteer community clean up days, fundraisers, video nights and so much more.
The relationship and bond between dogs and their guardians is greatly improved when they share and enjoy many activities together. The Downeast Dog Scouts Troop will allow handlers and dogs to socialize and gain knowledge. Troop members will work cooperatively to help dog related organizations through fundraisers of various kinds. By bringing together people and dogs of all ability levels, it will allow everyone to help each other learn new things. Most of all, troop activities are fun.
The Downeast Dog Scouts Troop will be part of a nationwide organization, the Dog Scouts of America. To join the local Downeast Dog Scouts Troop, an active membership in the Dog Scouts of America is required. The Dog Scouts of America is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational and charitable organization which promotes responsible dog ownership and the importance of the human/canine bond. A Dog Scout of America member’s dog may become an official Dog Scout after training for and passing the Dog Scout Test. Detailed information about the Dog Scouts of America is available at their extensive website www.dogscouts.org.
Mount Desert Island residents Tracy Haskell and Robyn Douglas will be organizing and co-leading the Downeast Dog Scouts Troop along with Tracy’s yellow Labrador Retriever, Simon and Robyn’s Great Pyrenees, Cirra. Currently, Simon and Cirra are training to become Dog Scouts. The co-leaders are seeking people who like to have fun with their dogs, like to learn new things and enjoy being responsible dog guardians.
An informational meeting for the Downeast Dog Scout Troop will be held on Sunday morning September 9, 2007 from 10:00 until 12:00 at the Mount Desert (Somesville) Fire Company located on Route 102 and in Somesville. For additional information call 664-2994 or email info@peacefulpack.com.
