Downeast Dog Scouts Troop 159 September meeting

The meeting will focus on planning for the Canine Carnival on September 20th at the Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth and the Dog Scouts Fall Walkathon. A trip to a Canine Performance Events (CPE) Agility Trial sponsored by the Eastern Maine Agility Club will follow the meeting. The Agility Trial will be held at Hadley\'s Point Campground in Bar Harbor. The Downeast Dog Scouts Troop is a membership organization in Hancock County that promotes responsible dog guardianship and increases the awareness of the human/canine bond. The troop offers many educational and fun dog centered activities. The is affiliated with the Dog Scouts of America. Information about the Dog Scouts of America is available at www.dogscouts.org. People and their dogs interested in learning more about the Downeast Dog Scouts are welcome. A trip to an Agility Trial in Bar Harbor will follow the meeting. Woofminster 2008 is a fundraising event being held for well-behaved dogs and their people to raise money for NEADS: Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, and in particular, their Maine Puppy Raisers Program. The challenge categories include Best Trick, Most Ear-Resistible Ears, Best Vocal, Best Mystery Mutt, Best Smile, Most Ball Crazy, Best 2-Legged Beggar, and Best Kisser. Winners of each category, plus 4 raffle winners will compete in the Best in Show Cover Dog Challenge. The best all-around pooch will win a professional photo shoot and the chance to be on the cover of the next Planet Dog catalog. People without dogs are welcome as well. The event will also feature a high end raffle, local vendors, service dog puppies, a bake sale, photo booth, flyball and agility demonstrations, and face painting. Meet the Breeds Showcase
Tractor Supply Co, Rt 1, Scarborough
Description: This is a relaxing and informative event to encourage responsible dog ownership in conjunction with the American Kennel Club's Responsible Dog Ownership Day. Our goal is to offer the public an opportunity to learn about the various dog breeds, see them in the flesh and fur and speak with people who know them best. In addition to booth displays, we present a grooming demonstration by a professional groomer. There will also be information tables staffed by members of local dog clubs.
New this year will be a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test conducted by York County Kennel Club's Karen Norteman. Bring your well-behaved dog to the Meet the Breed Showcase and for $10 see if Rover has what it takes to be a respectable member of society. The CGC test is 10-step test designed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to reward good-mannered dogs.

The Coastal Humane Society will be hosting a Rabies Plus! Clinic on Saturday, September 13th from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the shelter on 30 Range Road in Brunswick. Ear cleaning and nail trimming are $5 - $10 each. Microchipping is available for $25 per pet. Rabies vaccinations are available for dogs and cats only at $10 each. The Ovens Mouth Preserve is a unique 146-acre parcel of scenic shoreline bordered by swift tidal water, quiet coves and salt marshes. Of the three peninsulas at Ovens Mouth, the preserve includes those on the east and in the middle. There are 1.6 miles of hiking trails on the east peninsula, which is connected by a bridge to Ovens Mouth West. We expect the dogs to cross the bridge, go into the water, and trot a bit up the path on the west side. Well socialized canines and their humans are welcome. FMI: 633-4818.
