Activities for the April meeting include: Completion of recording members and their dogs for the Dog Scout Test, planning for future community education and community service activities and a walk with the dogs. The Downeast Dog Scouts Troop is a membership organization in Hancock County that promotes responsible dog guardianship and increases the awareness of the human/canine bond. The troop offers many educational and fun dog centered activities. The Downeast Dog Scouts Troop is affiliated with the Dog Scouts of America. The Coastal Humane Society will be hosting a Rabies Plus! Clinic on Saturday, April 12 from 10 A.M. to 12 Noon at the shelter on 30 Range Road in Brunswick. Ear cleaning and nail trimming are $5 - $10 each. Microchipping is available for $25 per pet. Rabies vaccinations are available for dogs and cats only at $10 each. Please bring previous rabies certificate if possible. All proceeds benefit the animals at the Coastal Humane Society. AKC All Breed B-MATCH & CGC Tests Entries taken from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Conformation judging begins at 11:30 a.m. Entry fees are: $12 per dog, per entry. Professional handlers only on owned or co-owned dogs. No dogs with more than 1 major. Puppies must be at least 4 months old and have been immunized. Classes divided by gender: Puppy 4-6, 6-9, 9-12 months novice open. Junior Showmanship judging at 11 a.m. Enter at ringside for $2. Dog must be entered in regular classes. Clases divided by age on day of match: Novice open for Junior (8 - 13 YEARS OLD) Novice Open for Senior (14 - 17 YEARS OLD). Conformation Judges - Breed, Group, Juniors & Best Puppy and Best Adult in Match assignments will be drawn on day of match. Canine Good Citizen Tests: Fee of $30. All dogs over 4 months of age are eligible. Not limited to registered dogs. Bring proof of current rabies inoculation and the dog’s brush or comb. Walk in Harmony

“Learn to Help your Dog Walk Politely on Leash." Unfortunately dogs these days spend a lot of time on leash. Why do so many dogs pull their owners around the neighborhood? Using a combination of The Third Way and Tellington Touch training methods, this class will explore different techniques to help dogs and handlers enjoy their leash walks. We will discuss the physics of leash walking, the Balance Leash, and leash walking using two points of contact. If you would like to use a head collar, you will learn how to gently introduce it to your dog and how to use it most effectively. Other various management devices will also be discussed to help find the right solution for each dog and handler team. We will explore using TTouch body wraps, practice meeting other dog & handler teams, as well as have fun with the “Playground of Higher Learning.” This class is suitable for dogs that pull on the leash, dogs that don’t want to move forward, or for puppies just learning what the leash is all about. “Gaining Confidence in the World." Like People, dogs are individuals, and some dogs just seem to have a harder time coping with social situations. This class will introduce different training techniques, including Tellington Touch, to help students discover ways to help their dog feel more confident and safe outside of their own home. Class time will consist of discussions, body work, leash work, and time on the Playground of Higher Learning. Our goals will be to help our dogs learn to relax and enjoy life more. Although the dogs will determine the pace of the class, handlers will learn ways to continue building confidence in their canine companions so that they can both enjoy life to the fullest.
